UK Work Visas
UK Tier 2 (Sportsperson) Visa
The Tier 2 (Sportsperson) visa is a sponsored work visa specifically for internationally established sportspersons or coaches. Applicants for a Tier 2 (Sportsperson) visa are expected to make a significant contribution to the development of their sport in the UK.
Sportspersons wishing to come to the UK to work for 12 months or less may be eligible to apply for a Tier 5 (Temporary worker) visa under the Creative and Sporting subcategory. Similarly, sportspersons wishing to come to the UK to participate in a sporting event, other than the 2012 Olympic/Paralympic Games, may be eligible to apply for a Sports Visitor visa.
Tier 2 (Sportsperson) Visa Requirements
To qualify for a Tier 2 (Sportsperson) visa under the UK points-based system, applicants must score a minimum of 70 points for attributes including sponsorship, English language and maintenance (available funds).
Tier 2 (Sportsperson) visa applicants must have a Certificate of Sponsorship and endorsement from their sport’s governing body to claim points for sponsorship.
Tier 2 (Sportsperson) visa applicants may also be required to meet certain health and character requirements.
Tier 2 (Sportsperson) Visa Entitlements
A Tier 2 (Sportsperson) visa entitles the holder to live and work in the UK temporarily. A Tier 2 (Sportsperson) visa is usually granted for an initial period of up to three (3) years and extensions may be granted.
Spouses and unmarried children under 18 years of age can make their own visa application to accompany their spouse or parent to the UK but applications will be considered separately.
The Tier 2 (Sportsperson) visa may lead to Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) which entitles individuals to permanent residency in the UK.
