UK Reopens Visa Service Centre in Libya

The UK will reopen its full visa service in Libya according to a government announcement on April 5, 2012.

The government announced that the UK Visa Application Centre in Tripoli would be back in operation after being closed in February 2011. UK visa applicants from Libya now can apply for visas in Tripoli instead of Tunis.

The UK's Foreign Office Minister for North Africa, Alistair Burt indicated that this event would help to develop the relationship between the two countries and promote stronger political, economic and cultural ties. "There has been sustained progress in all these areas over the past six months and I am confident this will continue. Better transportation is an important driver of this, and I look forward to the resumption of direct flights between the UK and Libya as soon as possible," added the Minister.

Starting from April 5, 2012, Libyans can apply for a full range of visas including for business, education, family visits or tourism. The visa centre will also provide Direct Airside Transit Visas (DATV) which is a requirement for Libyans transiting through the UK (unless travelling to or from the US, Canada, Australia or New Zealand). The new rules will also apply to Egyptian and Syrian passport holders.
