In order to make the application process more efficient, the UK Border Agency (UKBA) has made an announcement to change the payment process for UK Visa applicants in Japan.

Under the change, applicants for a UK Visa in Japan will be required to pay for their Visa online as part of the application process from 27, February 2012. In addition to Credit Cards, the payment may be done with debit cards and pre-paid cards such as Visa Card, JCB Card or a Master Card, carrying the Visa or MasterCard logos. Alternative methods of payment will not be accepted from this date.

When customers have completed the application process and payment for the Visa online, they will still need to visit the UK visa application centre to submit their documents and provide their biometric information (fingerprints and digital photograph).

All appointments to attend the Visa application centre should also be booked online following completion of the online application process.

According to the UKBA, the integration of payment into the online system will "provide a more streamlined visa application process for customers and is part of a wider move to allow almost all of our customers to apply and pay for their visas online by 2013-14".
